Introduction to PC Miler Rail
PC*MILER|Rail is a point-to-point rail
routing, mileage, and mapping software, used for rate
determination and negotiation, equipment management, rail
car mileage auditing, and carrier selection. Its powerful
North American rail network contains 240,000 miles of
rail line, over 49,400 freight stations, over
3,600 unique junction interchanges, and 709 railroads.
PC*MILER|Rail features the
industry-leading computerized representation of current
North American railroad routes and mileage, the result of
ALK’s close working relationship with all major railroads.
This railroad database is widely used by all major railroads
and most rail car lessors. For over 25 years, ALK has used
the rail application in many traffic diversion studies, and
a variety of costing applications. It has proven to be an
accurate source for determining the routes and mileage for
the U.S. Surface Transportation Board’s Carload Waybill
Sample.
PC*MILER|Rail generates routes and
determines mileage between any two rail-served locations in
North America. Available in PC*MILER|Rail is a Fuel
Surcharge Routing option to accommodate the Surface
Transportation Board ruling on mileage-based fuel surcharge
calculations. Routings for auto racks, intermodal, coal, or
grain trains are also included. Each location can be
identified by city name and state abbreviation, or by
commonly used freight station codes. You can quickly
calculate the “Shortest” route or the “Practical” route
(based on historical operations) between any two points. You
may specify interline junctions with the Junction Finder or
let PC*MILER|Rail choose junctions by weighing location
versus gateway.
PC*MILER|Rail is used by major North
American railroads, shippers, rail car lessors, rail car
mileage auditors, logistics companies, and consultants to:
-
Compute rail mileage used for Fuel
Surcharge calculations
-
Improve cost estimates and rating
-
Determine potential alternative
carrier and route options
-
Ensure fair payment of car
hire and state ad valorem taxes by accurate measurement
of mileage by carrier and state
-
Minimize empty haulage costs
by tracking empty and loaded mileage by rail car
-
Improve fleet utilization by
determining advantageous routings for empty equipment
