Customize the Map

Now let’s customize the look of your map:

  1. Click on the RouteMap window to bring it to the front.

  2. Click on the Road Legend and, holding the mouse down, drag the legend upwards so it is closer to the Route Legend. Then click on the Map menu, highlight Legends, and notice the check boxes that allow you to hide or show any of the three legends in the map window. Try hiding one of the legends, and then display it again.

  3. Try hiding one of the legends by clicking your right mouse button in the map window and deselecting it in the Legends sub-menu. Then display the legend again.

  4. Now zoom into a small area around Paris: use your cursor to drag a box around the city on the map four or five times. You should see towns and cities (represented by gray boxes) in the surrounding area.

  5. To label or hide a city, click the Label Cities button on the tool bar. Click the gray square that represents Montrouge (southwest of Paris) to make its label disappear. Click again to restore the label.

  6. To label a road segment, click the Label Roads button on the tool bar. Click on any of the road shields on roads outside of Paris to make them disappear. (Be sure to click in the center of the label, while the name of the road is showing in a yellow pop-up.) Clicking again in the same spot on a label makes the label reappear.

  7. To erase all changes you made to the labeling, click on the Clear Labels button on the tool bar. This will cause all default map settings to be restored.

  8. Now select Features… from the Map menu. This dialog enables you to remove some features on the map and to control the order in which features are drawn. Features at the top of the list are drawn on top of features that are below them on the list. For example, try moving “Roads” to the top - highlight “Roads” and click the To Top button. Click OK and see how roads are now drawn on top of all other features on the map. To entirely remove roads from the map, open the Features dialog again and click the check mark to remove it from “Roads”. Click OK. Then put the road shields back on the map and use the Lower button to place them under “Road Names”.

  9. Open the Features dialog again and click Reset to restore the original settings, then close the dialog.
