INTRODUCTION

When you operate a fleet of trucks, toll costs can quickly climb to hundreds of thousands of dollars. In fact, commercial trucks pay more than $30 billion in state and federal highway-user fees, including toll costs, according to American Trucking Associations’ statistics. Besides the actual cost of the tolls themselves, significant resources are spent planning routes over toll lanes, pricing quotes that include tolls, and reimbursing toll expenses to drivers.

Without a single reliable source of truck-specific toll data that is comprehensive, regularly updated, and easily integrated into your day-to-day operations, your business is faced with a significant challenge. To help customers realize substantial savings and new efficiencies in their operations, ALK created PC MILER Tolls.

Driven by the same technology and map data as ALK’s industry-standard PC MILER routing, mileage, and mapping software, PC MILER Tolls is a breakthrough application that generates exact truck-specific toll costs in combination with truck-specific routing across the North American routing network.

PRODUCT BENEFITS

With PC Miler Tolls you can determine whether it’s more cost-effective to take a toll route, or a non-toll route with a few additional miles, before routing a vehicle. ALK realizes that lane and load profitability analyses are not always simple and reconciling driver expenses is often a challenge. By using PC Miler Tolls’ exact truck-specific toll charge information you’ll be able to make better business decisions.

With timely and exact information, toll charges for a truck traveling a particular route can be quickly determined and communicated. Exact tolls for alternate routes can be viewed sideby- side in detailed mileage and toll comparison reports. Toll amounts submitted by drivers for reconciliation can be checked against the most recently published amounts for the routes that were driven.

Other benefits include:

  • Quarterly toll data updates provide you with the latest changes in nationwide U.S. and Canadian toll costs for commercial vehicles.

  • Rating… Stay competitive and profitable with precise operational cost and freight bill calculations. In the competitive trucking industry, where profit margins often are only a percent or two, it's often difficult to pass on toll costs to customers who are looking continuously for the lowest transportation costs. Access to exact toll data will allow you to be more confident and aggressive with pricing. You will no longer need to rely on estimated toll amounts when preparing customer quotes. No more tedious research with various state and local toll authorities to determine accurate rates! For routes run in the U.S. and Canada, PC Miler Tolls supplies a total toll charge as well as charges by individual road segment using any of ALK’s routing options. Detailed trip summary and comparison reports are available to display this information and compares cost and time estimates and toll charges between routes.

  • Routing… Determine the most cost-effective toll route or non-toll route, factoring in additional miles over toll costs. Exact toll data at the time of dispatch provides your organization with a level of efficiency never before possible. Dispatchers will now be able to determine the best route based on informed decisions about whether to use Toll Discouraged routing or to utilize toll roads for the best value, timeliness, and overall customer service. Reports generated specifically to provide comparisons between routes with and without toll road avoidance support this task.

  • Reconciliation… Remove the guesswork from driver costs and customer reconciliation. The reconciliation of driver and customer over all costs, including reconciliation of the toll receipts consumes time and resources. Significant time and dollars can be saved deploying PC Miler Tolls into your accounting processes. The availability of precise toll charge data will help streamline this task. Let PC Miler Tolls generate exact toll costs and provide detailed reports that break out
    tolls by road segment.

  • Revenue… Do you know the real cost of your lanes? If you’re not including toll cost in your overall analysis, you’re loosing revenue. With the cost of business increasing daily due to industry wide changes, such as raising fuel costs and fuel taxes, you’re losing potential revenue (and profits) if you’re not including exact toll costs in your overall analysis. With updated quarterly toll data releases, PC Miler Tolls will keep your bids profitable and up-to-date with the industry’s changes.

  • Retention... Improve driver retention and recruiting with exact toll reimbursement. Driver turnover rates vary greatly across the trucking industry. While there are differences in the way operations are conducted, one consistent theme in the industry is the high turnover rate and the costs associated with them. Many companies are offering driver incentive programs and are looking for ways to attract new drivers and to keep the drivers they already have. One way is to add toll cost reimbursement to the program to reduce the amount of paperwork associated with reimbursing drivers and to audit the tracking of such charges.

TOLL DATA CHARACTERISTICS

  • There are over 62,000 unique toll paths representing 111 toll authorities across the U.S. and Canada. (Unique toll paths refer to toll barriers by themselves and the numerous combinations for the entry/exit system and ticket/payment locations. For example, for each toll barrier there is one toll path to each barrier toll on that roadway. For the ticket entry exit system there is a toll path from every entry/exit to every other entry/exit.)

  • Vehicle Characteristics… ALK’s toll data is modeled for 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 axle trucks up to 132,000 lbs.

  • Toll Road Configuration… Toll road configurations include single toll plaza, periodic barrier tolls, and entry point/exit point tolls.

  • Directionality… Directionality includes two-way tolls, one-way tolls, and tolls that vary by direction.

  • Payment Variations… The model includes toll rates for both cash payment and alternative discount toll programs (e.g. EZPass) – a total of 26 discount toll programs are available.

    • Twenty U.S. based discount toll programs including: Cruise Card, E-Pass, EXpressToll, E-Z Tag, E-ZPass, FAST LANE, FasTrak, I-PASS, Good To Go, I-Zoom, K-TAG, Laredo Trade Tag, M-TAG, O-Pass, Palmetto Pass, PikePass, Smart Tag, SunPass, TollTag, Transpass, and TxTag.

    • Five Canadian based discount toll programs including: 407 ETR Transponder, B-Pass, E-Pass Canada, MACPASS, and StraitPass.

FEATURES

The PC Miler Tolls interactive application is based on ALK’s industry-standard PC MILER software interface running in a Windows or AS/400 operating environment. It generates fees, routes, distances, time and cost estimates, reports, and maps using a variety of easy-to-use routing options and unique features.

To generate distances and driving instructions for a route, the user specifies an origin, a destination, and any stops in between then calculates the route. An unlimited number of stops can be entered. In the Options dialog box, the user can choose from a variety of routing options including route type, time and cost parameters, hours of service breaks, road speeds, and empty/loaded designations. In the Tolls tab of the Options dialog box, toll calculation can be turned on or off, and up to 25 discount toll programs can be activated. A convenient currency converter is also available to report toll costs in either US$ or CAD$.

Detailed driving directions, a State Summary Report (with toll cost breakdown by state), and a Comparison Report (between two or more routes) are available with a click of the mouse.

ONGOING SUPPORT / COMPATIBILITY

Over time, toll roads and discount toll programs may be added or discontinued. In addition, the structure of toll charges in various jurisdictions will likely evolve in ways that could require changes to ALK’s data structures. These data structures might also need to change to support program efficiency. The toll data product is inherently dependent on the evolution of ALK’s PC*MILER application and data structures due to its reliance on routing in computing tolls. For these reasons, ongoing use of PC*MILER Tolls will require an install of the annual version release each year and the download of quarterly toll data updates.
